Aurora Borealis Lights Up the Sky in Texas

Rare Sight in South Central Texas

A rare sight was seen across parts of the South Central Texas sky Friday night. The aurora borealis, or northern lights, put on a brilliant show in the US as far south as Texas Friday.

Stunning Aurora Seen in Atlanta Area

Emily Smith of CNN reported that a stunning aurora caused by a severe geomagnetic storm was seen in the Atlanta area around 10:30 pm.

The aurora is a natural light display in the sky, caused by the interaction of charged particles from the sun with the Earth's atmosphere. The particles are drawn to the magnetic poles, which is why the aurora is most often seen in high-latitude regions.

Thanks to heightened solar activity, the aurora borealis could be coming to the Midwest and even the Northeast this weekend. The aurora does not need to be directly overhead but can be observed from as much as a 1000 km away when the conditions are right.

With both forecasts in mind, there very well may be a chance to see the aurora in your area this weekend. Be sure to look to the north after sunset and keep an eye out for a faint glow in the sky.
