Aurora Borealis Makes Rare Appearance Over Utah

Scientists Surprised by Spectacular Show

Residents Treated to Celestial Event

On Sunday, April 23, 2023, residents and skywatchers across Utah were treated to a remarkable and unusual celestial event—a display of the Aurora Borealis, also known as the northern lights.

Scientists at Space Weather Watch had predicted on Twitter that the northern lights could be viewed as far south as Alabama on Sunday, but the intensity of the display over Utah surprised even them.

The aurora borealis is caused by the interaction of charged particles from the sun with the Earth's atmosphere. These particles create a colorful glow in the sky, typically in shades of green, red, and purple.

While the aurora borealis is most commonly seen in the northern latitudes, it is occasionally visible in more southern locations during periods of high solar activity.
